Business plans are a fundamental part of any successful business. A business plan is essentially a formal written document detailing the plans and objectives of an organization, the plans for achieving those objectives, and the anticipated time frame for success of those plans. This document is used to guide investment and management decisions, and is especially useful in an environment where organizational goals must be achieved in a reasonably timely manner.
Business plans are important in determining venture priorities, funding requirements, marketing strategies, management structures, and competitive positions. In many instances, business plans are the first documents required for financing, acquisition of new technologies, or for a legal structure. Often, business plan concepts are needed in order to meet local, state, and/or federal regulatory requirements. A thorough understanding of the legal structure and planning for future goals is an essential step for any company's success. However, a business plan must be executed within the context of its existing structure and staff.
In order to prepare a complete, balanced business plan, you need to include a brief executive summary. Your executive summary will inform the reader of the purpose of your business plan and any goals that you may have for it. The summary should be no more than two pages. If you include more information in this section than in the rest, your plan will not be balanced. For example, if you list product features as well as the costs of manufacturing them, the plan will become very long and will lack substance.
In addition, a business plan helps demonstrate your commitment to the project. The essence of any formal business planning activity is two-fold: it creates a formal record of your intent and goals for the company, and it provides evidence of your motivation to carry out this intent. Simply put, if you don't show the ability to execute your plan, you have little business planning value! While a business plan helps to illustrate your motivation and dedication, the process of actually developing that plan is not the point. Developing a business plan in this context is akin to filling out your application for college or a passport.
In addition, you should include all of these elements in your business plans, but also keep them simple and focus on a single objective. A common mistake with traditional business plans is that they tend to become too complex and confusing to read and understand. This makes it difficult to determine where you are in relation to your competitors and how you are progressing as a business. While it may seem that a huge amount of information is required to write a good business plan, the truth is that there are only a few key elements to cover each section. This can result in overly complicated business plans, and in turn, a poor outcome for any business venture.
What exactly is a Business Plan Template? A business plan template is essentially a single comprehensive document that outlines your business goals, plans, strategies, tactics, and plans in plain, laymen's language. It must contain three fundamental sections: I) your business objective; ii) a strategy to achieve your business objective; iii) and a plan to implement the strategies to achieve your business objective. In other words, it is like a road map to guide you from point A to point B.
