While many entrepreneurs tend to believe that writing a business plan is not as important as actually implementing it, there are actually some very good reasons why it is extremely crucial. One of the first things that you need to do is determine what is the ultimate goal of your organization. By identifying what you wish to achieve, you can easily complete a more thorough and detailed financial model. Financial modeling, when done properly, can give an accurate depiction of where your company is at any given point in time. This means that you can easily complete the necessary course of action that is required for achieving your ultimate business goals.
Business plans are important in determining venture priorities, funding requirements, marketing strategies, management structures, and competitive positions. In many instances, business plans are the first documents required for financing, acquisition of new technologies, or for a legal structure. Often, business plan concepts are needed in order to meet local, state, and/or federal regulatory requirements. A thorough understanding of the legal structure and planning for future goals is an essential step for any company's success. However, a business plan must be executed within the context of its existing structure and staff.
Once you have completed the financial model and completed the basic market analysis, it is time to make a full blown executive summary. This executive summary should detail the most important aspects of your business plans, including the marketing strategy, market analysis, and your target market. However, this executive summary is only one section of your business plans. There are numerous other sections that should be considered in developing your business plans. Each section should focus on a key issue to enable you to clearly communicate your plans to your competitors.
C. A mission statement. The executive summary may be filled with relevant business history and current market conditions, but without a clear statement about what the company's purpose and/or mission are will create too much ambiguity. The mission statement is an integral part of the overall business plan and often goes a long way toward determining whether or not the venture is eligible for funding from angel investors or venture capital firms. When the purpose and/or mission statement is missing or ambiguous, it may be difficult for potential investors to make an investment decision. This is especially true if the new business is in an industry in which there are few established ideas for small businesses. As with the executive summary, it is important to include a mission statement in each section of the business plan.
To understand how to write a good business plan, it helps to understand what good business plans are made of. There are four key elements to a good business plan. First, the purpose of the plan must be clearly defined. For instance, if you are planning on starting a pizza shop and want to open a location in your back yard, then your business plan should outline how you intend to profitably utilize the space you have, what you are willing to do to attract customers, how you plan to keep them coming in, how you will ensure customer satisfaction, how you will ensure that your employees meet minimum requirements, and how you will market your pizzeria. These key elements will provide the framework for your business plan.
This is also the section where you state what type of business you are and why you believe that your business plan outline is needed. Most investors are impressed by entrepreneurs who take the time to discuss the details of their business in detail. They are impressed by people who put effort into what they do. If you don't detail your business plan outline here, potential investors will see that you are a nonprofessional. You will also likely receive fewer offers on financing when you use an executive summary as compared to other sections of the business plan template.
